There is nothing like a dame…

Nov 13, 2013 by

Were I the woman in charge of sorting out the tunes at Liverpool Philharmonic Hall on Monday evening last, when Dame Tanni Grey-Thompson gave a lecture, I wouldn’t have chosen the selected theme from Chariots of Fire, but this tune from South Pacific. Hammy I know, but that’s me.

Tanni G-T is an amazing woman, has achieved so much in sport and now sits in the House of Lords. Her disability was an obvious obstacle to overcome, but I was intrigued to hear she tried out about sixteen different sports before settling on wheelchair racing (apparently she was “too aggressive” for contact sports), and though she loved her chosen sport, she lost her first races, but just got better and faster, as she practiced her craft.

An example to us all on that one, I think.

Thanks to Liverpool John Moores University for this excellent Roscoe Lecture, podcast via this page over the next week or so.
